A lump in the breast can make you feel lump in your throat with just the thought of it being cancer. Still visit to the doctor keeps getting postponed. The biggest reason is finding a female doctor for the same as getting examined for breast problems by a male doctor is uncomfortable.
Before we get on to the details about the best doctors for breast diseases in India we need to clear certain myths about the breast diseases especially lump. These myths are another deterrent in reaching to the right doctor or even consulting any doctor.
Myth 1 – All Breast Lumps are Cancer
This is one of the biggest myths about the breast problems that can actually derail your life just because of the apprehension about the issue. Let us be very clear “All Breast Lumps are Not Cancerous”. Almost 80% of the breast lumps are non-cancerous. As per Dr Sumita Singh who is one of the most experienced breast specialist in India “most of the breast lumps come out to be cysts or at most a fibroadenoma of breast which are benign or non cancerous in nature.”
Myth 2- If I Am Young the Lump Can’t be Cancerous
Age is not a factor in case of breast cancer, it can happen at any age. So if you feel a lump in your breast even if you are young you need to see a breast specialist. However the mode of diagnosis for patients less than 40 years of age is different. As per Dr Chetna Jain a leading gynaecologist in Gurgaon “a female less than 40 years of age should not be subjected to Mammography unless and until she is having a family history of breast cancer. Instead of a mammogram an ultrasound of breast should be done which could be followed by a FNAC (Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology) test if required.”
Myth 3 – If I Have Breast Lump and Mammogram is Normal I Am Safe
Mammogram is the primary diagnostic. It is just an X-ray of your breast. As per Dr Sumita Singh “apart from mammography we need to physically evaluate the patient to understand the type of lump. There are cases where we suspect that even if the mammography is normal it might be cancerous and in such cases we go for MRI of Breasts”. Mammography may miss some breast cancers especially if you have dense breasts.
Myth 4 – Breast Cancer is Always Painful
Generally breast cancers are not painful, however having painful lump doesn’t rule out the chances of breast cancer. There are inflammatory breast cancers as well which present with pain in breast, swelling, discharge etc. Hence pain in the lump or breast is not a yardstick for breast cancer.
Myth 5 – If I Am Breast Feeding My Baby I won’t have Breast Cancer
It is true that breast feeding your child reduces your chances of having breast cancer. However it is not a guaranteed that breast feeding will eliminate the chances of breast cancer. There are another type of lumps that can happen they are called intraductal papillomas. As per Dr Pallavi another very prominent name in gynaecologist in Gurgaon “we get many females in the clinic with problem of lump in the milk ducts of the breast, generally near the nipples. These females are mostly above 40 years of age and are scared that they have developed breast cancer. These are generally intraductal papillomas which are non cancerous and can be easily removed by a breast surgeon.” Dr Chetna Jain says “we do advise mothers who have just given birth to the child to breast feed their child and explain them the benefits of the same to child as well as mother, one of them is ofcourse less chances breast cancer.”
Myth 6 – If A Lump Is Small In Size It Is Less Likely To Be Cancerous
Size of a breast lump has nothing to do with the chances of developing into a cancer. As per Dr Soniya radiologist with Anand Diagnostic Centre in Gurgaon “breast lumps are of various sizes and we have seen biggest of lumps coming out to be fibroadenoma and very small lumps turning out to be cancerous. Hence it is always advisable to see the breast specialist as soon as you notice a lump”.
Myth 7 – If I Don’t Have a Family History of Breast Cancer, I Cannot Have It
This is another big myth in the population that if there is no family history then you cannot have breast cancer. Contrary to this as per the American Cancer Society less than 15% of patients diagnosed with breast cancer had a family history of breast cancer. As per Dr Sumita Singh “most of the patients that we have seen and diagnosed with breast cancer didn’t have any family history of breast cancer and this is one of the reasons of delaying seeing the doctor which becomes very risky in many cases”. Family history is one of the aspects that is seen while taking the medical history of the patient but that’s not the only thing that guides the doctor towards correct diagnosis.
